This little nightstand was given to us free by our neighbors. It had seen it’s fair share of use in their daughter’s room and there was marker and nail polish stains all over it.
I started out by sanding the whole piece down with 150 grade sandpaper. I made sure that the whole piece was smooth even if it looked like hell during it’s makeover. Then I cleaned the whole piece with warm soapy water. The drawers were missing their guides and sitting on wood, so they were hard to slide in and out. I ended up ordering some drawer guides from Rockler and screwed them to the back of each drawer.
I chose to go with “Somerset Gold” by General Finishes as the main color. It’s a bright, but fun yellow and just felt like it gave a funky, fresh look to this piece. I accented the white trim with regular white paint I had left over from another project.
I spray painted the original hardware with a white lacquer and then sealed the spray paint so that it wouldn’t chip with a clear gloss enamel spray. All of which can be purchased at your local hardware store.
I gave the inside a pop of color with something that would compliment, yet still contrast. Since the theme was sunshine, why not add the sky? I painted the inside of the drawers in “Lyric Blue” by Behr which I found in their cottage section palette.
Here is the before and after. I was working on this piece when I found out that a friend from high school lost her husband in a plane crash. I really needed something to cheer me up so this piece gave me the vitamin D I needed to perk up. I figured the color would be too bold for some folks here in Texas and expected it to take a few weeks to sell, but a nice lady who was redoing her daughter’s room for her 16th birthday emailed me after a day or so and picked it up. I guess the folks here in Texas like a pop of color every now and then!
