Today I am sharing with you guys a makeover of a Mid Century Modern style end table I picked up from a Facebook sale site. As usual this piece was a wood and laminate combo, but with what I had in mind, all the right pieces were wood for staining.
Since this piece was going to be for a friend, he decided to trust me with artistic freedom. Knowing this was going to be a piece for a man, I decided to give it a little geo touch, and use some manly neutral colors…if such a thing exists..:)

My usual prep process included removing the legs and sanding by hand, using my orbital sander with 220 grit to scuff up the surface, and stripping/sanding the drawers for a new coat of stain. Then I used Rustoleum Flat White Primer (spray can) to spray the parts I would be painting over.
I already had in mind where I would be going with this piece based off knowing my friend’s personality. He is an outdoorsy, hipster kind of guy and I knew he would appreciate a warm mix of wood and paint, with a touch of MCM flair.
I painted the base using Fusion Mineral Paint’s “Midnight Blue.” It is one of the newer colors, and I am so excited they have decided to add a navy blue to their lineup. I love that this blue really is the perfect shade of navy.
I rarely ever do anything with a geo pattern on it. So I figured I could attempt it with something easy like this bottom-wrap triangle. And because I’m such a novice with taping off patterns, what I did was measure the center point from top to bottom, left to right and made that the tip of the triangle. Then taping was easy from there. I also got lazy, and didn’t want to cut out paper to tape off the reverse part of the triangle, and instead used a cardboard piece to cover the blue from overspray. It worked out for the most part, but I did have to do some touch-ups. The gray is actually Rustoleum’s “Granite” Satin Spray paint, I got from Wal-Mart on clearance. Had to put it to good use some how!
So if you’re wondering if the different wood stains were intentional…truth is it’s not. Both the legs and the drawers were stained in Rustoleum’s “Dark Walnut” with the exact same amount of coats. This just goes to show you that different woods accept stain very differently, and the colors you get from it are just as unique as the wood grain it bears.
The hardware was re-done with Rub N Buff’s Antique Gold Wax…I’m beginning to love this stuff! The whole piece was sealed in General Finishes Satin Poly.
I used the last of of my Navy and Tan Arrow paper I got from Spoonflower. It just fit this piece so well, and it looked great on the Industrial Style Boys Dresser I did a few months back. I may have to order more in different colors!
Until next time!
