“Little Lamb” Dresser with Funky Triangles

Hey guys! Today I am bringing you a post on a cool little dresser I did using Fusion Mineral Paint’s “Little Lamb.” The color is part of their “Tones for Tots” Collection, and I thought it would be awesome on this vintage dresser that is perfect for a little boy’s room. If you haven’t seen the line up of Fusion’s nursery colors, you should definitely head on over! They are the cutest colors, and totally safe for your little one’s furniture.

This dresser was a find from the app Offerup. I always find a lot of cool stuff on that app. It makes it easier for negotiating a price too. This is what it looked like before:

It was a little wobbly, the base front was missing part of it’s trim detail, and it needed a good sanding due to all the scratches, dents and stickers. What we ended up doing to prep this piece was:

• Glue bottom drawers together with wood glue and clamps.
• Knocked off the remaining trim using a rubber mallet (it was a separate piece that was glued on and came off easily).
• Inserted wooden plates to each side of the dresser where the drawers sit. There was no room to install side mount drawers guides so we had to get creative. We cut blocks of wood and glued them to the sides, so that when the drawers pulled out or slid back in, they would not be wobbly and come out all crazy. We also waxed the wood blocks to help with the friction, and now the drawers have a McGuyver’ed track. Hey you gotta do what works right?
• Sanded with 100 grit paper to get the stickers and finish off.
• Filled holes, knots, dents and deep scratches with wood filler and let it dry overnight.
• Sanded with 150, 180 and finished with 220 to smooth out the surface.
• Taped off the drawer sides and wiped with a tack cloth.
• Primed using Zinsser Cover Stain (2 coats).

This was an EASY prep compared to most pieces we’ve had to do. And since my husband was getting ready for deployment at the time, I did most of this work myself to see what my capabilities were, since I would have to be doing this while he is gone. He cut and glued the wood blocks and clamped the drawers, but I did the rest. Repairs are not easy, so from here on out until he gets back, I’m simply buying pieces that need minor repairs.

Here is what the dresser looked like finished! I sprayed two coats plus some touchups of Fusion’s “Little Lamb.” I would describe it as a pale elephant grey color with some brown undertones but I love it for a kid’s room. I decided to try and get into the “Scandinavian” spirit and tape off some triangles in a random, but orderly pattern.

I sealed it with three coats of General Finishes HPTC in “Satin.” I always love working with this topcoat because it never gives me any issues, dries quickly, and is very durable when it comes to heavy use. Plus it levels beautifully.

I’m really digging how the triangles turned out. Although it was time consuming, the easiest part was using spray paint in black and white. I did have to measure it out with a yard stick but after the first couple, it was very easy. Frog tape for the win!

I found that Milk Glass Hobnail vase at a thrift store and that cute wooden wagon was purchased for my son from a Flea Market in Spring Grove, Illinois (husbands hometown). It’s from the sixties and came with wooden alphabet and number blocks. I love finding vintage toys!

I had been reserving this paper I got from Spoonflower for my son’s dresser, but to be honest, my garage is so full of projects that getting to personal projects is something I have to strategically plan. So I figured I can always reorder, and decided to use it on this dresser. I think it works so perfectly with the matching triangles, and it sets the theme for an outdoors, adventure kind of theme…which just so happens to be my son’s theme.

He woke up from a nap, and saw me staging. He must have though I was setting up for a personal photo shoot because he climbed up there with his teddy, turned around and said “Cheeee!”
