Happy Saturday Everyone! I’ve been getting around to some much needed housework like painting the crown molding that was installed this past summer. It’s a lot of work to be tedious, so I’ve just decided to take it a little bit at a time. I’ve also been working on my New Year’s resolution to finally clear out my garage from my inventory of furniture. Slowly but surely I’m gaining back some square footage. But since I’ve finally got some time to sit down at the computer and catch up here on the blog, I thought I’d blog about one of the cutest pieces I did last year in in Homestead House Milk Paint, “Antique Gold.”

This cute little cabinet was a newer piece of furniture, but it was solid wood. I’ve seen different styles of this furniture around, but I really liked that this cabinet could double as a mini-bar, nightstand, or an entryway piece for a small space. It is really versatile, so I wanted to do something fun with color to make it “pop.”
The Prep:
- Clean cabinet with Krud Kutter and soapy water
- Wipe down with Mineral Spirits to remove wax residue.
- Lightly sand with 220 grit paper to open the grain.
- Wipe away dust with tack cloth.
I love using Homestead House Milk Paint because of the coverage. This piece only took ONE coat of Homestead House Milk Paint in “Antique Gold.” HHMP’s colors are highly pigmented and it mixes easily, which makes it some of the best on the market!
As the paint dried, it crackled and crazed in some places, but for the most part, I got a smooth piece with some texture. I distressed it lightly with 220 grit paper to give it more character sanding in places where I thought natural distressing might occur.
I finished it off with some black wax to add some depth and age. Homestead House and Fusion make an amazing line of waxes, and their black wax is the easiest I have ever worked with. I sealed with Fusion Beeswax finish to deepen the color and provide some protection. This wax is my go-to for any trouble finishes I may have. It has saved many projects of mine that have given me issues like an uneven finish, or a dull appearance. It really penetrates the wood and is extremely durable!
Can’t forget about my liner shot! It’s so much fun dressing up these pieces with accessories like hardware and drawer liner. This one made the yellow pop with some summery pink and green vibes. I love winter and I am hanging on to it as long as I can, but I know some of you out there are counting down the days until Spring.
Hopefully this project brought you some warm sunshine!
