I’ve been working on a lot of rustic and distressed pieces lately and wanted to take a break to work on some creative pieces. I really like working on modern style finishes when I feel the need to do something different, because modern pieces really challenge you to open your mind to colors and designs. When I saw this dresser on my local offerup site, I knew it had the potential to go from generic wood to something fabulous. Clean lines means it also has the potential for geometric designs or even a fun color block. I decided to paint with two of my favorite colors from the Country Chic Line, “Happy Hour” & “Hurricane.”
My original plan was to do a geometric design on some of the flat areas and sides, but bleed through had other plans. I also encountered some other issues with the surface area that prolonged the finishing of this project and in the end I just decided to scrap the designs and make a statement with color.
The Prep:
- Clean with a degreaser like Krud Kutter and a scrubby sponge.
- Sanding with various grit paper from 120-220.
- Prime with Zinnser B-I-N Shellac Base Primer.
I am so glad that I let the colors be the statement on this piece. Color can completely change the look on any piece of furniture simply by pairing colors, or even just accenting with decorative finishes. For this piece, I chose Happy Hour and Hurricane by Country Chic Paint. These two colors are in my top 5 favorite colors by Country Chic Paint.
Happy Hour is a pretty, frosty mint color. In some light it looks like a cool seafoam color. In other light it looks like an icy green-blue. Possibilities are endless with colors like this that can act as both a neutral and a statement color.
Hurricane is a handsome deep navy color that reminds me of the dramatic craftsman home colors. It has gray undertones and can appear as a charcoal blue or a gray navy. Together, I think these colors balance each other out well!
I also added three coats of a satin clear coat for protection and polished off with a beeswax for bit of shine.
I added these hairpin legs because they are so easy to add height to anything. And they are extremely sturdy! Adding hairpin legs is also a good way to throw back to retro and MCM style.
Even though my original vision for this piece didn’t come to fruition, Im so glad that it I was able to make a really unique piece with some beautiful colors. I think they pair well nicely and are gender neutral. This was a true lesson that sometimes, you just have to go with the flow and let the color speak for itself!
