Its not often that I paint with Chalk Paint since I’m very dependent on General Finishes and Fusion Mineral Paint products. I like to stick with what I know and I’ve had very little issues with GF and FMP. But on the occasion I get bit by the shabby chic bug, chalk paint is my go-to whether it’s home made or right out of the can.

This French Provincial triple dresser and matching nightstands was a custom order, specifically Annie Sloan’s “French Linen.” I’ve painted with Annie Sloan one other time, but that was by hand not by gun (spray gun that is). Chalk paint is quite thick and unless you have the power system needed to force such a dense amount of paint through your gun, I would not recommend spraying this. I tried with my Earlex HV5500 and failed miserably.
Instead I would recommend the Critter Spray Gun that you can purchase off of Amazon for $40. I also used a pancake 6 gallon compressor set to about 45 PSI. If you want to read a full review of the Critter I did a while back, you can click here.
Despite how they look in the before pictures (dirty, yellow, dated), these pieces were solid wood. Jake stripped and sanded down the tops to get the previous finishes off. The rest of the pieces, we just filled, and gave a good sanding to smooth them out and get them ready for paint.
We stained the tops with two coats of General Finishes Java Gel and sealed with a gloss oil based polyurethane.
I did have to think the paint nearly part for part. One cup paint to one cup water. Because I was using the Critter, I wanted to make sure there were no clogs and opted for multiple thin coats. After about six coats of paint, I used General FinishesHPTC in Satin to seal.
Typical French Provincial hardware is always an ivory white color or gold. I’m so glad the customer requested we paint these in oil rubbed bronze!
I found this cute wallpaper at Target that happens to match the French Linen color perfectly and not take away from the style of these pieces. I’m so glad the FP furniture is making a revival with bold and fresh new colors!
Spraying chalk paint isn’t difficult and it really is about what works for you. Personally I don’t buy Annie Sloan Chalk Paint unless the customer requests it just due to the price and the location of the retailer’s but this line really does have some beautiful colors.

What a wonderful transformation of this dresser. I also love the handles. Do you know where I can source them? Also, where can I buy the oil-rubbed bronze finish you’ve applied?
The Driftwood Home says
Hi Mia! The handles were original to the piece, as most french provincial pieces have the same handles. There are some hardware companies that make reproductions so you might want to try dlawlesshardware.com. Also, the oil rubbed bronze finish is simply spray paint bought from Home Depot.
