Hello Friends! Now that summer is here I bet you guys are swapping out your home decor with bright and fresh colors to give your homes a fresh pop…am I right? Well if not, an easy way to do that is give your smaller furniture pieces a coat of pretty paint! I learned after many hours of watching HGTV that the easiest and most inexpensive way to frequently change out decor is by going small for a big statement. In this case, less is more!

Take this cute Duncan Phyfe end table for example. While I wouldn’t paint an extremely large piece of furniture like a dresser or hutch in this color (I personally prefer neutral colors for bigger pieces so I won’t get tired of the color), it’s perfect for this end table that started out like the picture below.
Thrift stores are great for finding small pieces like this, especially on discount days! I love small furniture pieces like this because:
- They are small and usually easy to move around to different and awkward spaces.
- They can have a huge impact on a room, especially if you get out of your comfort zone and choose to paint it a bold color.
- No matter if you decide to keep or sell, smaller pieces usually go quicker than bigger ones because they are so versatile.
- You can have fun styling vintage furniture any time of the year, and you know these pieces are built to last!
When I brought this piece home, I peeled the veneer off the top in two pieces and sanded it down flat. The drawer stuck a little so I rubbed a candle along the drawer glides to help it slide easier. Other than that, I gave it a light sanding and one coat of Shellac to help prevent bleed through. Duncan Phyfe pieces are usually mahogany or stained in mahogany. It will bleed through your paint if you don’t prime or shellac first.
I decided on painting it with Americana Decor’s “Vintage.” This is such pretty color and I think it can even function as a neutral if styled with the right decor. You can get this paint at any Craft Store, online at Amazon, or at Home Depot or Lowes. I got mine from Home Depot and this is the 3rd time I’ve used this color. This paint is also great for beginner painters, who want to try chalk paint without spending the big bucks on the designer line stuff. The $9 I spent on this jar has gone a long way and I still have plenty for another small piece.
I decided on distressing this piece because I like the look and the density of this paint leaves you with visible brush marks. Since I also spray furniture with an HVLP (see which system I use here) , brush marks is like nails on a chalkboard to me, and distressing this paint helps to eliminate that.
Finding the hardware for the was as easy as choosing the one that fit without having to re-drill the hole. I like this simple black and white floral knob for this piece.
I used the same floral paper that I used in the Coal Black Wall Table to line the drawer. I think it just adds another fun pop of color to a colorful piece already!
I sealed everything with Rustoleum Clear Coat Spray in Matte. Spraying small pieces like this is much easier than brushing by hand believe it or not, and since we live in San Antonio where the heat feels like that nuclear scene in Terminator, I was able to recoat after 20 minutes, giving it three coats total.
I felt pretty fancy taking these photos because I used my new Canon T5i that I ordered off Amazon and I feel that it pretty much took the photos for me. I love it!
And here there is the before and after. See what a little paint can do? There’s a reason why I call it liquid magic! Hope you guys enjoyed this post!

The table is so pretty. It is a very nice color and brings out the detail of the table. I always love to see a surprise in the drawer and you did not disappoint.
