Man, I feel like it’s been a hot minute since I’ve had the chance to sit down and actually write a blog post. I really need to be better about posting more and being consistent with my content, especially since all my affiliate links seem to perform better when I do that đ . Good thing this post is actually about a beautifully chippy piece that has always had a special place in my heart, not only because of the curves, but the amazing color by Homestead House Paint Company, “Algonquin.”

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a sucker for rich neutrals. And while that may seem like an oxymoron, it’s hard not to see the beautiful potential in all the variations of creams, grays, and beiges. This color in particular is stunning in both the Fusion Mineral Paint line as well as the Homestead House Paint line.
This piece was a hot mess when I purchased it. The original top had been damaged completely and needed replacing. Even the beautiful curved feet had looked like some one took a hammer and chisel to it. It needed a ton of work, but those pieces are usually the best to work with because they challenge your creativity.
The Prep:
- Remove old hardware and top.
- Fill and sand hardware holes with dowels and Bondo Wood Filler.
- Clean with Krud Kutter and soapy water.
- Sand entire piece with 120-220 grit paper.Â
- Spray two light coats of Shellac to prevent bleed through.
Getting this finish is largely in part to the previous finish that was on the dresser. I did not sand to bare wood, but instead just removed any flakey parts and smoothed out the surface. The other minor part was the shellac finish that was built up to keep the milk paint from settling in the grain. I love how the darker finish just comes through underneath.
I love doing these rustic plank tops. They have so much character in the wood and it just takes it to a whole other level of rustic and farmhouse. This top was made from 2×6 planks joined together. I stained them in Varathane “Dark Walnut” and sealed them with my favorite oil-based polyurethane.Â

I especially love how this brass hardware just compliments the look so much. The warm color…the chippy paint…the dark wood…the hardware…what isn’t there to love? This is THE PERFECT FARMHOUSE Â dresser!

Where can you find the rustic plank wood for top? Home Deeps? My hubby probably knows. I didnât talk to him yet. Shopping at those reclaimed barn wood places is sooo expensive!!

These are actually from Home Depot and Lowes. They are the Whitewood or Common Board. You can always get cheap pine boards and beat them up a bit for some character!
