A short update in our home reminded me that I still had not blogged about two pieces that I painted a long time ago for my son’s room in our old house. His “Midnight Blue” dressers made their debut back in the summer and as we put the finishing touches on his room here, I wanted to make sure to show you both of them side by side.

Since Homestead House is the manufacturer for both Homestead House Milk Paint and Fusion Mineral Paint, some of their Fusion colors cross over into their milk paint versions (or is it the other way around?). One color on the Fusion line I am very fond of is, Midnight Blue. It is a very rich Navy color and I knew this color would be timeless and classic for a boys room, especially since my son could continue to grow into his furniture as he gets older. Here is the first dresser I did that serves as the TV console, storing his movies, art supplies and books:
I was thrilled at how the finish turned out on this, because it was the perfect combination of coverage and chippy. It was the exact look I was going for. There was some minor repairs and some prep that needed to be done so here is a condensed version of what I did to get this finish:
Prep Steps and Products
- Vacuum all corners, drawers, nooks and crannies (includes beneath and behind dresser).
- Bug bomb for insects with my favorite insecticide for furniture.
- Hot Soapy wash down with Krud Kutter.
- Lightly sand using flexible sanding pads.
I really loved all the original details like the casters, keyholes and routed grooves. This turned out to be a really handsome piece for my son’s room. The cup pulls are not original, but I wanted a contrasting aged brass finish that went with the rustic theme. I found a great deal on these Brushed Antique Brass Pulls from Amazon and knew they would be perfect!
Now lets take a look at his main dresser, which is a little wider and is used mostly for his clothes. When I bought these two together at a garage sale, I thought the were a matching set. But as I was prepping this piece (using the same method as above), I realized there were several differences in the builds and although they were the same style (both Eastlake) they were different in their details.
Can you tell the difference? The column and the scrollwork are slightly different and the base sits flush instead of on casters. Although there are holes for casters in the feet, so maybe that is something Ill consider adding on later. For now, I like the way it sits on the floor.
I could go on for days about what I did to get this look on this dresser, but since I know most of you are here for the pictures, Ill shorten it to the products I used that helped me achieve this looks. Here they are:
Final Finish
- Used my FAVORITE Zibra Round Brush to paint in-between all the details and grooves.
- Painted only two coats of Homestead House Milk Paint in “Midnight Blue.”
- Distressed with 220 grit Sanding Pad.
- Sprayed 3 coats of GF High Performance Top Coat.
- Polished with Fusion Beeswax Finish.
I really love the wood grain popping through on the larger dresser. Just adds another layer of texture and depth and it makes my son’s dresser’s seem all the more naturally aged. Thats the beauty of milk paint! You can get so many different versions of finishes with one product! Can’t wait to show you guys the full reveal of his room!

Love Homestead House! Both pieces are beautifully painted! I have a buffet I’m planning on painting with Midnight Blue Fusion. I a little confused, is the first dresser covered with Fusion and the second with milk paint? PS If you haven’t checked out D Lawless Hardware, you should, such good deals and the hardware is stunning!

Hi Derry! Since Homestead House manufacturers both Fusion and HHMP Milk Paint, sometimes their color names cross over. This is their milk paint version. I do love D. Lawless very much, I use their hardware frequently!
