I wanted to take some time to talk to you guys today about my fear of non-neutral colors. From the business perspective, bright colored furniture pieces have always been a difficult sell for me here in San Antonio. I tend to stick to neutrals like whites, creams, linens and grays because they are so versatile and I bet almost every person has a piece of furniture in their home painted one of these colors. But since I have started blogging with Country Chic Paint, I’ve really begun to start trusting the bolder colors. And no…I don’t mean black or navy blue, those are considered neutrals to me. I’m talking the reds, the corals, the pinks, the purples, and the aquas. I guess everything in moderation.
Surprisingly, this beautiful set of end tables has been one of my “most-liked” posts on Instagram. This set was once an outdated vanity, but was converted into a set of nightstands. Right away I knew they had to be pink, but finding the perfect shade was going to be difficult.
Everything on these tables was original. From the appliques, to the casters, right down to that unique hardware, I knew there was nothing I really wanted to replace. Aside from dings, and age marks, these ladies were in excellent condition. Our client wanted to keep a wood top and I talked him into keeping the legs natural as well. This was an excellent choice because it 1. it’s currently trending and 2. it breaks up the feeling of too much color.
I knew Country Chic Paint’s Fall Limited Edition Color “Enchanted,” was going to be the perfect shade of blush pink. I love that this color is not too pastel nor is it too red. It really is the perfect dusty, warm pink with peach overtones. After two coats, I noticed I was having some bleed through issues, so I turned to my bleed through killer, Shellac.
I normally spot treat with shellac but it’s always smart to add a few thin layers to pieces you think might bleed. When in doubt…shellac. It saves you a lot of trouble in the end and keeps you from spending extra product to fix those spots. After the paint touchups, I sprayed three coats of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Satin.
I also added a light layer of black wax to sit in the grooves and details and sealed with a clear wax for protection. These look very much like they belong in an English Cottage or princess themed room. I cleaned up the hardware and just gave them a light dusting of Country Chic Paint’s Gold Crème. I think gold and blush go hand in hand on any style piece from primitive to modern.
I really only needed to give the top and legs a light sanding before I gave them one coat of Watco Danish Oil in Dark Walnut. Danish Oil is great for refreshing dehydrated wood and evening out scratches and marks. It is a varnish/stain mix so there is a very light layer of protection included, but what I love most is the new life it gives to wood surfaces. Just look at these original veneer tops!
Can’t forget the accessories either. This pretty gold foil polka dot paper makes the perfect drawer liner and matches the gold pulls. It’s the little things that really seal the deal on these pieces.
So what do you think? This set is pretty popular on my Instagram but I’d love to see them make the rounds on Facebook and Pinterest. Feel free to share these on all your social media sites!
