Have you been surviving the heat waves of the summer? I usually like to spend a lot of time out in the garage painting and prepping my furniture, but the heat and humidity here in central Texas is so draining. It’s almost unbearable. Right now I’m working on a few pieces that are on far ends of the time period spectrum, but I thought I’d blog a bit about some end tables that could go vintage, or modern. I knew these were destined for Buttermilk Cream. Here is the before photo:

As you can see, they aren’t much to look at from the seller’s photo. The one thing that drew me to them was the price and the fact that they were solid wood. Right away, I knew my vision for these would be a modern farmhouse style, but a break away from white and wood.
As you can see, these tables are now much more appealing to the eye in this buttery, cheesecake color, called Buttermilk Cream by Homestead House.
During the prep, I wanted some chippy, so I only gave them a light scuff. However, that proved to be a huge mistake because of the previous finish. The next morning when I came out to finish them up, nearly all of the paint had flaked off because it wasn’t able to penetrate the wood.
Note to self: Add some bonding agent next time, or bust out the sander.
I ended up having to sand them down to bare wood since I didn’t have any bonding agent on my shelves. Of course I sent a 911 to Homestead House and they were able to send me a gallon of bonding agent for my future projects.
Homestead House recently released a new product that I have completely fallen in love with. It’s a Stain and Finishing Oil in One. It’s no odor, water resistant, and highly durable. I’ve used this before on a couple of other pieces and it has proven to stand the toddler test. Especially a toddler who likes to bang cars and toys on table tops for the sake of making noise. I used Cappuccino on these table tops and love the rustic warmth of the stain!
I wanted the color to be the highlight of these tables, so I just used a simple black bin pull to finish off that modern farmhouse look. I also did some light distressing around the edges; enough to give it some character but not look overdone.
And why not add some cute paper? I really have found a special place in my heart for the color yellow. I’ve found that working on these projects for Homestead House has really challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and do something creative…do something different. What about you?
