Welcome Friends! I have some exciting news to share with you! If you have been following my blog, then you know my posts the last couple of weeks have been alluding to some very exciting news that I was dying to share. Life got the best of me the last couple of weeks and kept me very busy, but at the same time neglecting my blog. Now that I am finally caught up, I can share that news with you and what that means for our visions as Team Sutton Designs.
Back in March, Jennylyn Pringle contacted me about working with her and Homestead House Paint Company to help build their website gallery on their milk paint line. What this means is that I was selected to paint and photograph furniture using their milk paints and other HH products to feature on their website!!! How excited and honored we are to not only collaborate with a successful company, but since they are also the owners of Fusion Mineral Paint and manufacturers for Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint, I know that I can truly vouch for their products and tell you that this isn’t just a sponsored post, but a post about their products that have been successful for me, time after time after time.
Homestead House has as wide selection of 61 colors that are organic, biodegradable and have zero VOCs. This is perfect for those who have smell sensitivity to paint products, and low odors meaning you can paint indoors if the weather isn’t always cooperative. Now 61 colors is a lot of furniture for me to paint, but I am totally up to the task, especially since Milk Paint is so easy to use!
So I’ll break open the Homestead House Milk Paint Series with a color similar to the one on the Fusion Line, Bedford.

I have used the Fusion version of Bedford on this set of coastal inspired Beachy End Tables, and when I did my “How to get the Chippy Look with Fusion” tutorial on a custom dresser.
If you have ever worked with milk paint then you know how wonderful the variations in color and depth are. No two pieces are the same with milk paint, not just because wood and finish are different, but because each artist can have their own method with mixing, time in letting pigment dissolve, and others like to layer colors for more depth and texture.
Just as with the Fusion version, Bedford is this creamy “greige” with hints of green and linen that form this wonderful color. Grays are my favorite color to paint because they fit in anywhere…any home, any decor.
Another thing I love about milk paint is the “chippy-ness.” It’s unpredictable and sometimes gives you another version to your vision, but one thing you can count on is that it definitely gives you an old world primitive look. This is perfect for those looking to recreate age and wear without having to wait out the years.
My method for mixing milk paint is simply shaking it in a mason jar with a lid. I used one part milk paint (1/2 cup level) to one part water. You can choose to add more or less water depending on your preffered consistency, but this ratio works perfectly for me. The end result is a creamy, whipped paint that glides on smoothly and absorbs quickly. I have to say that this milk paint formula is by far one of the best I have used, because it was so easy to mix, dried quickly and sanded down to a perfect solid finish.
I sanded the dresser with an orbital sander using 220 grit paper. Then I sealed it with two coats of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Satin. I also like to finish off polishing with Fusion’s Beeswax finish because the poly is more for durability and doesn’t always seep into the milk paint evenly. It can give you a washed out look, but I have found using the wax over the poly corrects this.
I also used Homestead House Stain and Finishing Oil in One in the color Cappuccino. The color was achieved using only ONE COAT of oil. And the results for both color and durability literally amazed me. After curing, the top resisted water, spills, even heat rings (although I would never recommend putting hot drinks directly on any furniture without a coaster).
Well folks that it. I hope you enjoyed this makeover as much as I did. I am looking forward to working more with Homestead House products and brining you more featured works. To see a list of their colors and product selection, click here.
Stay tuned for more chippy goodness!
